Are Christians Today's Flat Earth Society

Have you ever been in a group whose “smarts” made you feel “dumb”? It could be scientists, or perhaps it’s a “computer literate” group who uses terms you don’t understand. That’s no fun, is it.

College freshmen often find themselves in such situations. The professor is spouting words that have no meaning for them. He/she tells students we must be able to prove what we believe. Evidence! But when you don’t understand the words, you can feel real “dumb.”

While searching through some files for a class I am to teach I ran across an article from the Chicago Tribune in the late 70’s. C. K. Johnson was quoted as saying:

“The sun is a kind of spotlight, 32 miles across, that moves in a spiral just 3,000 miles above the center of the earth, or what people call the North Pole.”

Johnson, president of the 1,400 member “Flat Earth Society,” said there were members in “just about every nation on earth.” But what about all those space exploration pictures? And all those satellite pictures showing the earth to be a sphere, a globe? “All faked,” Johnson replied. “The moon walk was done in a Hollywood set as part of a gigantic hoax.” Pretty weird, wouldn’t you say?

It’s pretty hard to believe that all those 1,400 members really believe what Johnson says. Maybe they just want to have the membership card to get a laugh at the local café. Evolutionists’ took Johnson’s statements and pointed at creationists, saying they are just as foolish as the “flat earth people.” They say, “creationists ignore all of the facts and cling to old, out-dated superstitions.” In other words, to believe in God is as irrational as it is to believe the earth is flat. Superstitious fools!

That is sheer nonsense! Christians have been pointing to the evidence of God, Creation and Inspiration for years. We have encouraged—yea insisted—that rational conclusions can be reached only when we examine the facts!

Where is the evolutionist that will provide the facts, the evidence that demands the conclusion that one species arose from another? Where is the evidence for evolution comparable to that which proves the rotundity of the earth? Humans daily observe proof of the rotundity of the earth. But evolutionists are not real anxious to discuss the evidence for evolution. Where are the scientists who have observed Darwin’s Natural Selection?

Modern methods of “proving” evolution attempt to bully everyone into assuming that the evidence has already been confirmed, and those who disagree are merely superstitious fools. George Gaylord Simpson of Harvard has written:

“No space is devoted to proofs that evolution has in fact occurred. Such proofs are not only ample but overwhelming. Of course, no amount of proof can convince those who simply don’t want to accept the truth.”

Yes, his last sentence is quite true, but Simpson is the one to whom it should be applied. He demands we accept the ”fact of evolution” on his assertion that the evidence exists. That sounds—at least to me, a poor, “superstitious fool”—a lot like what the “Flat earth” people are saying. If a comparison is to be made, it is between evolutionists and “flat-earthers”, not Christians. I stand ready, as do many who believe in God and Creation, to give evidence that is rational, even “scientific.”

Note what evolutionist George Wald says about the origin of life:

“To make an organism demands the right substance in the right proportions and in the right arrangement. We do not think anything else is needed, but that is problem enough. One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task to concede that the spontaneous generation of an organism is impossible. But, here we are, as a result I believe,
of spontaneous generation.”

As you may know, spontaneous generation is a belief that life came from non-life, which science proved false years ago. Maybe it is not the Christian who is the fool in this discussion. If you think Wald is alone in this view, hear this:

“From the mere fact that we are here, we are forced to assume that once upon a time at least one case of spontaneous generation took place.” Isaac Asimov

While the best evidence for the existence of God and Creation is in the Bible, science itself provides evidence to believe in both. I close with this last quote, from Sir Arthur Keith, an honest evolutionist who says evidence is not his friend:

“Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it because the only alternative is special creation, and that is unthinkable.”

Maybe Christians are not so dumb after all. The evidence is our friend, not the evolutionist’s.

Truth - The Exciting Thing

As a youngster I listened to Winston Churchill’s speeches over the radio during World War 2 and was greatly moved. Later, I acquired some tapes of his more famous speeches and was again captivated. That man knew how to hold an audience without a rope. He used words as a general would use his troops marching into battle. It was powerful stuff.

It was not until I read William Manchester’s biography of Winston Spencer Churchill that I learned of the Irish –American lawyer and congressman, Bourke Cockran, and the impact his oratory made on Churchill. Cockran advised Churchill that he should avoid scurrility, affectations and cant. He said: “What people really want to hear is the truth – it is the exciting thing – speak the simple truth.”

Plato, centuries before Cockran, stated, “There is nothing so delightful as the hearing or the speaking of truth.”

Jesus came into the world speaking the truth and the people heard him gladly. Even those officers sent to arrest him returned without fulfilling their mission. Their explanation? “No man ever spoke like this man!”

Later, the apostles of Jesus would be accused of turning the world upside down. How was it accomplished? Not through military might, intellectual brilliance, or political maneuvering, but truth – simple truth.

In our world, so beguiled by lights, glamour, noise and motion, nothing could be more exciting than the speaking of truth.
