A Reminder...Count Your Blessings...Now

“Count your blessings, name them one by one.” This simple, yet profound admonition hit me squarely in the face this morning. I have just finished reading a headline on the front page of the newspaper which stated, “Crash kills father of ‘miracle’ twins.”

The “miracle” twins had been prematurely born last April to Brent and Julie Jones of Fort Worth. Little Jacob and Lauren were described as being no bigger than a dollar bill and were not expected to survive. But they did! Brent and Julie, along with the rest of the family, completely embraced and loved the twins. One can only imagine how much these parents and extended family were looking forward to the holidays.

Melody McDonald, staff writer for the newspaper, observed, “In a tragic twist of fate, however, neither parent will be home for Christmas. Julie Jones will instead be making funeral arrangements for her husband of five years from her hospital bed.”

Her husband had been killed and Julie was badly injured in the crash – a crash that had occurred when a driver with a suspended license and two previous convictions for driving while intoxicated slammed into their Chevrolet Tahoe.

A senseless crash to be sure! Police reports indicate that the man responsible was traveling the wrong way and when being questioned, the officers smelled alcohol and possibly marijuana on the driver, as well as in the borrowed vehicle which he was driving.

The article revealed three or four previous incidents when the man was arrested and charged for similar violations. Truly in this case, the wise man’s warnings regarding alcohol are clearly revealed: “At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: "They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?" (Proverbs 23:32-35 NKJV).

As we think of the sad and tragic story above, it serves to remind all Christians to take heed to God’s warnings regarding alcohol, and for that matter, all sin; it also reminds us all to count our many blessings regarding our families, our brothers and sisters in Christ, our own well being, our special country, and much more. James cautions, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit,’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’” (James 4:13-15).
