"Old as Dirt" ?

Old men often joke with each other about their age, sometimes saying another is as “old as dirt.” The back and forth “discussion” of this subject seldom goes beyond some friendly banter, but there is a question that deserves to be asked:

JUST HOW OLD IS DIRT?
The ultimate age of planet earth is often a matter of debate, especially if the Bible enters the discussion. For many, the various theories of the earth’s age are answered with the claim of an ancient earth – and I mean really “ancient.”

Reading the Bible leaves one with the impression of an earth having a history of no more than about ten thousand years. But if we leave the Bible behind, we begin to hear that the earth – and the universe as a whole – has an age in the billions of years.

Harold Blum said it this way:
“The origin of life can be viewed properly only in the perspective of an almost inconceivable extent of time.”

Harvard Professor George Wald even claimed that “time performs the miracles” needed for evolution. Therefore, evolution is impossible without millions – no – billions of years. But do the facts substantiate those years? They do not! The search for evidence for those years has been singularly unsuccessful.

On the other hand, is it possible to find evidence, real evidence, that the earth is relatively young? Is the “young earth” accepted on the basis of a pulpit-pounding-preacher? Or hard facts?

A SHRINKING SUN
Data that has accumulated over many years reveals that the sun is literally shrinking at a rate of 0.1% per century. John A. Eddy, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, has assembled data revealing this rate of shrinkage. Using these figures, and going back only 100,000 years, the sun would have been twice its present size. And if this planet were twenty millions of years old, the sun would have been touching the earth. Talk about “global warming…!”

DECAY OF EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD
Dr. Thomas Barnes, having done extensive research into earth’s most important force field, has written:

“It is known that the earth’s magnetic field is decaying faster than any other geophysical phenomenon.”

He concludes that only 1,400 years ago that force field was twice its present strength, and going back 4.5 billion years ago that field would have been 200 million times its present strength.

Using this and other information Dr. Barnes postulates that the earth could be no more than 10,000 years old.

POPULATION STATISTICS
By taking into consideration the occurrence of plagues, wars, births, deaths, famines, growth factors and various catastrophic events, this study concluded that if the earth is as old as demanded by evolutionists, the earth could not be more than about ten thousand years old. If we accept the “ancient earth” hypothesis proposed by evolutionists, human beings would be stacked twenty deep over every inch of the earth’s surface today. Is it possible that some scientists just ignore any fact that does not fit in with their own pet theories?
Incidentally, the formula used by “population statisticians” is:

pn=(Cn-x+1) (Cx-2)

Let me know when you figure it out.

TOO MUCH HYDROGEN
I have several sources counting up to 103 different experiments that indicate “ancient earth” theories are greatly flawed. Most of these stem from the amount of certain chemical elements found within the universe. For example, hydrogen is constantly being converted into helium throughout the universe. However, there appears to be little if any hydrogen being converted anew from other elements. So – if the universe is billions, or even just millions of years old, the amount of hydrogen would have been depleted long ago.

But, the amount of hydrogen is not depleted, nor is it even close to depletion. This one study prompted evolutionist Fred Hoyle, Ph.D., to agree grudgingly that the earth and the universe are relatively young, not ancient. He wrote:

“We can see that the universe being what it is, the creation issue simply cannot be ignored.”

OTHERS

  • The growth of active coral reefs, 10,000 years.
  • The influx of radiocarbon to our system, 5,000 to 10,000 years.
  • The formation of river deltas, 5,000 years.
  • And many, many more.

Moses was right when he wrote:

“For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it,” Exodus 20:11.

“Dirt” may not be as old as they thought.

Being Thankful

The Thanksgiving Day holiday is here. It is always a good time of year. Usually it brings a warm and loving setting for family and friends. As Americans we have so much to be thankful for. We live in a free democratic society, and we are blessed with abundance. Such blessings are unknown to most of the world. Christians, however, have many more blessed reasons to be thankful to God. Here are a few that come to mind:

  1. We are thankful that we are saved. A tremendous sacrifice was given for us that we might have forgiveness of our sins. Great is the love God extended to us in the person of His Son! Christians should really be thankful and rejoice in the Lord for such love (Philippians 4:4).
  2. We are thankful for the privilege of prayer. It is a wonderful blessing to be able to talk to the Almighty God. In prayer we can praise His holy name for being so good to us. Through prayer we can ask for help with our problems and struggles. By faith, we know that God hears us and will answer responsively. What a blessing of comfort!
  3. We are thankful for His providential care. He has promised to take care of our daily needs if we will put Him first in our lives. In fact, God has promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). What a blessing of peace!
  4. We are thankful for the family of God. God in His wisdom has given us the church family who loves and cares for us. It is a wonderful feeling when we see our brothers and sisters in Christ showing us deeds of kindness and love. We are blessed with the wonderful sense of belonging!
  5. We are thankful for the privilege of worshipping God. God desires our worship (John 4:23). He deserves to be worshiped because of the love that He has shown us in the sacrifice of His Son. Understanding the greatness of the gift, we desire to worship the Giver. In our worship we are given the privilege of expressing our love in a special way. What a blessing to worship God!

God has been so good to us. Let us keep His acts of love ever before us. Let us always be thankful.
