"My Last Best Days on Earth"

Imagine this to be your last day on earth. Suddenly everything is beautiful. Your friends are wonderful; your husband is priceless, and your children are the sweetest in the world. The faults of enemies seem small and insignificant. And friends – oh, how you love the touch of their hands. And loved ones – oh, how sweet it is to hold them close and drink in the precious moments. Suddenly heaven feels real. God seems very personal. You are confident that stepping into the spirit world is only a move into a better world with joys too sweet for this earth. Immortality is too necessary not to be true. This awareness lends to all earthly ties a new appreciation and to all heavenly ties a stronger reliance, and this is earthly living at its best.

When she learned that she was facing death, Hazel Beck Andre wrote, “My Last Best Days on Earth.” Among other moving and thought-provoking things, she said:

For ten weeks now, I have looked death in the eye, and I can truthfully say that each day has been happy, filled with peace of mind and overflowing with thankfulness for the thoughtful things done by friends and family.

I have concentrated on John 14:1-3; John 16:16-33; and all of chapters 20 and 21; Romans 8:35,39; 1 Corinthians 15:35-58; 2 Corinthians 5:1; Philippians 1:20-23; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Revelation 21:1,4…

If I were to live life over, I would take more time for the savoring of beauty – sunrises, opening crab-apple blossoms, the patina of an old brass coffee pot, the delighted surprised look on a tiny girl’s face as she pets a kitty for the first time.

I would eliminate enough outside activities so that I could be always the serene core of my home – for the triumph of serenity has crystallized for me and my family in these last days.

I would get closer to people faster. When death is imminent we open our hearts quickly and wide. How much more Christian love there would be if we didn’t wait for death to release our reserves!

I would live each day as if it were my last one, as I am doing now.
