It constantly amazes me when I realize just how far medical science has progressed in recent years. We are learning more about the diseases that confront man than ever before, and we are finding the solutions to those painful, dreaded diseases.
Some thirty centuries ago David wrote these memorable, forceful words in Psalms 139:14, I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE.
We have become so accustomed to the medical professions accomplishments that it is easy to forget what it was like when our grandparents had dental work performed without anesthesia. Many in generations past died of physical ailments for which todays doctors now routinely and successfully treat their patients.
Former United States Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, was so amazed at the intricacy of the human body that he made the following statement:
When I make an incision with my scalpel, I see organs of such intricacy that there simply hasnt been enough time for natural evolutionary forces to have developed them.
Yet, some are still claiming just the opposite view, and most who do so have never made any incisions, nor have they discovered just how fearfully and wonderfully made our bodies truly are. Ignoring the intricacy therein, they claim that some forces apart from the Creator of the universe are the source and the cause of our bodies magnificent qualities. Evolution, they say mere accidents in time is the creator, not God.
Just a few months ago, one of the foremost proponents of evolution and atheism, Antony Flew, abandoned many of his former views of mans ancestry. Why? Because of this very same scientific truth the makeup of the human body, including DNA, a relatively recent discovery of modern science.
|We may need some formal education to really understand about DNA (thats Deoxyribonucleic acid for you curious ones), and other terms related to science. However, all of us, without such education, can comprehend the amazing qualities found in our own bodies. A booklet by William Orr gives some interesting information about our body and the intricate design thereof. Following are some excerpts from his booklet titled How We Can Know God Is
We Have Two Eyes
Talk about precision cameras! I want to tell you, we certainly are provided with one our eye camera. It is equipped with depth perspective. Because we have two eyes instead of one, we can tell how near or far off an object is. Also, we can tell if an object is moving away from us or coming nearer.
Did you ever consider how wonderfully they are protected?
While they are in the front of our head where they could easily be injured, they are safe because they are indented. Seven interlocking bones provide a perfect protective socket. Then, over the eye, to catch dust and ward off perspiration are small hairbrushes called eyebrows and eyelashes. Some may think they are just for decoration, but no, they are utilitarian as well.
Then, in each eye, there is a marvelously efficient windshield cleaning apparatus. Each time you blink, the eyelids close, but also a thin stream of specially prepared antiseptic cleanser washes the windows of our souls.
Consider the physical properties of the eyes. Seven sets of muscles placed at strategic points automatically turn the eyes to any desired position swiftly, quietly, and efficiently.
What we know about our eyes causes us to gasp in wonder. For instance, there is an efficient self-adjusting lens. In less time than it takes to tell it, your eye perfectly adjusts to near and far, and then back again. You can look at a star light years away, then quickly look at your watch on your arm two feet distant and your eye instantly accommodates your needs.
The question we ask at this time is this: Can a mere accident really explain our eyes? Was it just a fluke, luck that our eyes exist at all? That is exactly what Darwin and his followers would have you believe. But who can believe it?
Now, consider the miracle of our hands:
Every time you look at your hands you should take off your hat, bow your head and thank God for these amazing tools attached to your wrists. Just think of what the hand can do. It can lend itself to the most minute and delicate work. The steel engraver, the pianist and the machinist must have swift and accurate hands. The do. They are.
But the hand can be remarkably strong too. For the carpenter, the farmer and the bricklayer must have hands that are tough and powerful. It makes no difference whether the work is light or heavy, delicate or coarse, the hand is capable of adapting itself and functioning perfectly.
And then there is the thumb. Whoever planned the thumb is without doubt the greatest inventor of the ages. Where would we be without this opposing finger? I tell you, the thumb is the key to progress; its the master gadget of production. Surely our hands remind us of the Master Craftsman.
Honestly now, how can intelligent people believe the universe, or the human body, with all its detail, all its capability, could have just happened, just the result of mere coincidence? No, what we see all around us is evidence of an intelligent, powerful Creator. And that is the God you read about in the Bible.
