SHAPING OUR NATION
Can a nation be properly governed apart from the principles and precepts of the Bible? Benjamin Franklin did not think so. On June 28, 1787, during a critical discussion and near division at the First Constitutional Convention, he publicly addressed the chairman and said, Has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of Lights to illumine our understanding? In the beginning of our contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard and they were graciously answered. I have lived a long time, sir, and the longer I live the more convincing proof I see of this truth that God governs in the affairs of men. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the sacred writings that except the Lord build the house they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.
As did all the framers of our constitution, Benjamin Franklin believed in God and in the Bible as His Word. In this brief excerpt of his speech, he alluded to several biblical principles from the books of Daniel, Matthew, Proverbs, Psalms, and Genesis. Franklin was well acquainted with the Bible and relied upon its principles to help shape our nation.
At the Dripping Springs church of Christ we likewise believe in helping to shape our nation through the principles and precepts of the Bible. Both the Old and New Testament alike are filled with practical advice about money, parenting, communication, relationships, business ethics, and even governmental affairs. Come study with us as we investigate these important and relevant topics affecting our community and beloved nation. Help us to herald the message that Gods righteousness will exalt our nation (Proverbs 13:34).
